race for our kids | candlelighters fundraiser

Childhood cancer doesn’t discriminate and affects kids from all walks of life with different disease types and treatment with the hope to win the battle.  Cancer is very heartbreaking for the families and kids dealing with everything associated with the disease.

Each year, the Candlelights Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada selects Ambassadors to represent children afflicted by cancer in the Southern Nevada region.

I was overjoyed when Melissa from Candlelighters called and asked if I would take a few photos of this year’s ambassadors for their upcoming 23rd Annual 5K & 1 mile “Race for Our Kids.”   The race will be held on September 14, 2013 at the Exploration Park in the Mountain’s Edge Master Planned Community.  Chet Buchanan from 98.5  KLUC Morning Zoo [a radio show in Las Vegas] will be hosting the fun filled event.

If you want to volunteer or have a team that wants to participate please go to the Candlelighters’ web site and register.

let’s never forget | memorial day

This Memorial Day weekend, as we enjoy time off with family and friends please take a moment to remember our dedicated men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces and ultimate sacrificed their lives for our great country.

Also of concern, many of our young military members are coming home with post traumatic stress disorders, lost limbs and other injuries associated with their tour of duty overseas.  Let’s not turn our backs and support them as they get the rehabilitative treatment needed for a better quality of life and contribute to society.

As a military photographer and chief photographer for Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs for over 20 years, I have documented almost every phase of military life and the hardest is a dignified transfer when a deceased military member is returned home and greeted by their family.   Last month, I  photographed an Air Force member  (name withheld at this time) as he was reunited with his family at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

Thank you to the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard,  Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Clark County Fire Department, Patriot Guard and Southwest Airline for making this home coming a first class affair despite the circumstance.

My prayers go out to the families of deceased loved ones this Memorial Day.

taylor + rick | a match made half a world away

Taylor and Rick are both proudly servicing for the United States Air Force in Las Vegas.   Destiny brought them together during a 180-day tour of duty at a forward operating base in Afghanistan.  According to Taylor it took Rick almost two months before he noticed of her.  After several attempts, opportunity presented itself… One day she almost fainted outside the base’s dining facility and asked for his help.   The southwestern gentleman Rick is, he jumped into action and made sure she was back to full strength and their journey began.  They unravelled each other personalities and by the end of their deployment they decided being together back in the United States was what they wanted more than anything.  They parted separate ways but reminded in contact and short afterwards a Las Vegas wedding was in the making.

“Mommy and Rick were married in the backseat of her car,”  added Taylor’s son Hunter.  Since they wanted to get together again, they had a simple Vegas style drive through wedding.  Before long Rick was reassigned to Las Vegas and they started a family with the addition of Wyatt.
Taylor and Rick’s maternity photos on October 30th, Wyatt arrived the following day.
